The country is situated on the mouths of three major European rivers, the Rhine, the Maas and the Schelde. Much of the Netherlands territory has been reclaimed from the sea, and almost 40% is below sea level. An extensive system of dykes and dams has been constructed which protect the area from flooding.
The Netherlands is the world's third largest producer of natural gas, and plays an important role in the petroleum industry.
