What is the Centre for Alternative Technology
The Centre for Alternative
Technology (CAT) is in Machynlleth, Wales. Its aim is to inspire, inform and enable people to move towards a sustainable future by providing living examples of sustainable technologies in action.
Visitors to CAT see:
- working displays of wind and water power
- solar energy being used for electricity and to heat water and buildings
- energy efficiency
- environmentally-friendly buildings
- organic growing
- the treatment of solid and water wastes.
Every year, thousands of schoolchildren visit the Centre. Many stay in eco-cabins on the site, where they measure all the energy that they use, compare this with the energy they use at home, and explore why there is a difference.
The Centre works on a
co-operative basis, where everyone is paid the same and has an equal say in decisions.
