Designing a water-balanced railway
What is the Centre for Alternative Technology
The Centre for Alternative Technology
(CAT) is in Machynlleth, Wales. Its aim is to inspire, inform and enable people to move towards a sustainable future by providing living examples of sustainable technologies in action.
Visitors to CAT see:
- working displays of wind and water power
- solar energy being used for electricity and to heat water and buildings
- energy efficiency
- environmentally-friendly buildings
- organic growing
- the treatment of solid and water wastes.
Every year, thousands of schoolchildren visit the Centre. Many stay in eco-cabins on the site, where they measure all the energy that they use, compare this with the energy they use at home, and explore why there is a difference.
The Centre works on a co-operative
basis, where everyone is paid the same and has an equal say in decisions.
