The context

In order to survive, all human-beings have the same basic needs for food, shelter and clothing. How we go about meeting these needs will depend on who we are and where we live.

• Some people earn money to buy necessities by working for an employer. This is often the case in countries in the northern hemisphere, where a lot of major industries are based.
  
• Other people have to be more self-reliant, earning money by making the most of their skills, knowledge and the resources around them.

The world is not an equal place. Although 75% of people live in the developing world, only 8% of the world’s industry is based there. As a result, ordinary people can’t rely on big business to provide them with work and income. Instead they have to find other ways to meet their basic needs.
